City of Mount Gambier Stage Band Awards 2022 info and rules

One of the challenges of the National Stage Band Awards has always been their popularity, with so many bands entering certain divisions that we’ve had to break them into separate parts (Div 3.1, 3.2 etc).

This has allowed many bands to perform in whatever division they wished and kept the numbers manageable for adjudication.

The only downside is that there are no ‘overall’ places awarded and acknowledged for the division.

One of the features of GIJ is that bands and directors can see where they stand in relation to other bands of similar standard and use this as a learning/motivation tool. So….

We are creating a whole new part of the Stage Band Awards, one that allows there to be overall places awarded and acknowledged for any division that has to be split due to numbers of entries.

Here’s how it will work: –

1) Bands will still perform in sub-divisions as necessary (Div 3.1, 3.2 etc)

2) 1st, 2nd and 3rd will still be announced for each sub division

3) The 1st place bands from each subdivision will then perform again in a ‘final’

4) Overall 1st, 2nd & 3rd will be awarded for the entire division from this final. Prizes will be awarded to the bands who receive these awards.

This creates an entirely new element to the Stage Band Awards which will acknowledge those bands who are at the top of their divisions.

I’m sure the atmosphere at the ‘finals’ will be extremely exciting and it’s also a chance for everyone to hear the top bands together!

  • Each band must perform three pieces; the SET PIECE, BALLAD OF OWN CHOICE & Other OWN CHOICE
  • Band warm up areas will be provided prior to performance time.
  • Band performance times:
    Division 1 – 30 minutes
    Division 2 – 25 minutes
Division 3, 4, 4+ & 5 – 20 minutes (This time is for quick set up and on-stage tune up only; it does not include the time for warm up)
  • Adjudication penalty for any band’s performance time exceeding the time limit, will be at the discretion of the adjudicator.
  • The musical director and players of each band must not change any notation by pitch or rhythm of their choice of ballad.
  • All dynamics must remain as originally scored.
  • Bands may show their individual interpretation and creative style during their “own choice” performance only.
  • The adjudicators will pay particular attention to correct articulation and phrasing, intonation, ensemble balance and blend, soloists, rhythm section groove. The main objective is for each ensemble to play each separate selection in the correct style in which it has been written.
  • The adjudicators will be selecting players from Division 1, 2, 3 and 4 for the “Superbands.”
  • Adjudicators will be selecting players from Division 1 for Future Finalists
  • All bands will receive a constructive assessment of their performance with suggestions on how to rectify any problem areas. You will also be provided with a recording of your performance before you leave for your trip home.
  • There must be no more than 20 musicians on stage for Division 1, Division 2, Division 3 and Division 4 bands and no more than 25 musicians for Division 4+ and Division 5 at any one time. The only interchange of band members between divisions that is permissible, is from the lower division band to a higher division band, unless a consensus of approval is reached by Music Directors involved in the participating division.
  • Judging will be made up of the following for Stage Bands:

SET PIECE /100

BALLAD /100

OWN CHOICE /100

TOTAL SCORE /300 POINTS

ANZ Vocal Ensemble Award 2022 info and rules

Each ensemble must perform the SET PIECE and an OWN CHOICE PIECE.

The Vocal Ensemble Awards format has been revamped due to feedback from teachers and adjudicators over the years. Here are the main changes:

Small ensembles:

There will now be no set piece for small ensembles, allowing students greater flexibility and closer repertoire fit. The two divisions remain the same: div 1 and open.

Large ensembles:
Large vocal ensembles are now spread over only three divisions, however they are now subdivided into vocal range as well, essentially creating nine separate divisions. Division three no longer has a set piece, again allowing for greater flexibility and catering for the individuality and variety of ensemble combinations at this educational stage.

So the divisions will now look like this:

SMALL ENSEMBLES (4-7 members)

  • Division 1 (small) any voice combination
  • Open (small) any voice combination

LARGE ENSEMBLES (8+ members)

  • Division 1 (large) SSAA
  • Division 1 (large) SATB
  • Division 1 (large) TTBB
  • Division 2 SSA
  • Division 2 SAB
  • Division 2 TBB
  • Division 3 Treble voices
  • Division 3 Mixed voices
  • Division 3 Male voices

We believe these changes will address some of the inequities that have crept in over the years, and provide a more even playing field for our students and adjudicators.

  • Own Choice songs must be sufficiently jazzy to be considered appropriate entries. If you are at all unfamiliar with the jazz genre, or are in any doubt about your chosen piece you can contact the Co-ordinator of the Vocal Ensemble Awards, Naomi Crellin naomi@idea.com.au, to confirm your selection will not jeopardise your adjudication results.
  • Vocal ensemble warm up areas will be provided prior to performance time.
  • Division 1 Large and Division 1 Small – each ensemble has a total of twelve minutes in which to enter the stage, perform their two pieces, and exit the stage. Adjudication penalty for any vocal ensemble’s performance time exceeding the time limit will be at the discretion of the adjudicator.
  • Division 2 Large, Division 3 Large and Open Small – each ensemble has a total of ten minutes in which to enter the stage, perform their two pieces, and exit the stage. Adjudication penalty for any vocal ensemble’s performance time exceeding the time limit will be at the discretion of the adjudicator.
  • Any changes to the set piece scores must be approved by the composer, marked on your score and provided to the adjudicators. Any changes to the own choice scores must be clearly marked on the scores provided to the adjudicators.
  • All ensembles will receive a constructive assessment of their performance with suggestions on how to rectify any problem areas.
  • Adjudication will be made up of the following:

SET PIECE /100

OWN CHOICE /100

TOTAL AVERAGE SCORE /200 POINTS

Small Jazz Combo Awards 2022 info and rules

This division is for small ensembles/jazz combos of all levels with 4 – 9 performers.

It is designed to provide an outlet for ensembles playing classic/modern small group jazz repertoire (eg: be-bob, hard-bop, cool jazz, trad jazz, fusion, etc…).

Whilst written musical arrangements are fine, the emphasis in a small jazz combo setting is more towards improvisation and ‘solos’.

Extra marks will be given for a varied repertoire (tempo, groove or soloists) and for an engaging ‘performance’.

    BALLAD OF OWN CHOICE
AND TWO OTHER OWN CHOICE PIECES
