Welcome to the James Morrison Jazz Scholarship, a prestigious award dedicated to recognising and celebrating exceptional talent in Jazz music. Open to young jazz instrumentalists under 19 years of age as of January 1, 2025, this scholarship is now open.

Generously sponsored by Benara Pastoral, the scholarship offers $10,000 annually to support the development of emerging artists and further their musical careers. This initiative is administered by Generations in Jazz Inc., in honour of the Scott Family, who had a profound love for jazz and a strong commitment to nurturing musical talent.

Australia's pre-eminent launch pad for young jazz musicians 

To apply for the James Morrison Jazz Scholarship, solo instrumentalists are encouraged to complete the Scholarship Application Form, attaching the required supporting documentation and recordings. From the received applications, six (6) finalists will be carefully selected. Finalists must be available to attend the conclusive adjudication in Mount Gambier during the Generations in Jazz Festival from May 2 to 4, 2025.

Selection of the finalists is based on the judging panel's evaluation of applicants meeting eligibility criteria and displaying an exceptional level of musical ability and accomplishment, taking personal needs into consideration.

Recording Requirements

In addition to the written documentation required, James Morrison Scholarship applicants must provide the following audio recordings as part of the audition process:
 

  • Two pieces, contrasting in style and tempo, no longer than 5 minutes per piece.

 

 

For all Instrumentalists -

 

  • 12 bar blues (mp3) & Ballad of own choice (mp3)

 

Drummers Only –

 

  • A swing tune (mp3) & A Latin tune (mp3)

 

Make sure that the recording itself demonstrates the highest possible audio quality so that your performance can be evaluated fairly. Professional recordings are not necessary and recordings using a Smart Phone (iPhone or similar), iPod / iPad with external mic, Zoom Recording Device or Digital Voice Recorder is suitable.

No video recording will be accepted as this is an anonymous audition process.
