From South Australia - Trombone - Nominated by Lauren Henderson
This Adelaide-based trombone player performs in a wide variety of ensembles ranging from salsa to jazz, big band music, soul and pop.
Thomas Voss has worked alongside diverse artists like 90’s pop star Kate Ceberano, award-winning Chicago trumpet player Marquis Hill, and Australian jazz legends Emma Pask and James Morrison.
Voss’ skill as a trombonist, and his talent as a composer and arranger have earned him a Freedman Jazz nomination in 2022.
Thomas graduated from the Elder Conservatorium with First Class Honours in 2017, and received three Helpmann Academy/Elder Conservatorium awards during his studies.
He was the finalist for the 2017 James Morrison Scholarship and placed first in the International Trombone Association’s Carl Fontana Jazz Trombone Competition, becoming the first Australian to win that award.
He has written for university and professional ensembles, and Voss’ 2022 Freedman Jazz entry ‘Natural World Suite’ shows off his flexible stylistic approach and nuanced melodic voice.
The suite of compositions featuring seventeen musicians explores natural phenomena - from a river, to a day in the life of an Echidna, while also reflecting upon losses in Australian biodiversity.
Thomas has written adjudication pieces used by ABODA SA and Generations in Jazz, and is currently the lead trombonist for 2021 and 2022 Australian National Jazz Orchestra Youth Big Bands.
Thomas is deeply involved in music education, having served as program coordinator, board member and ensemble director for JazzSA Superbands since 2019.
Voss released his debut recording in 2019, in collaboration with award-winning vocalist Lauren Henderson.
Should he win the Freedman Jazz Fellowship, he will record an album with his Adelaide-based ensemble with the aim of attracting national and international attention.
The Music Trust and SIMA are proud to present Thomas Voss as a nominee for The Music Trusts’ Freedman Jazz Fellowship in 2022.
